SAN FRANCISCO — It was supposed to be a big week for biotech.

The J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference is an annual industry cotillion in which biotech puts on its best face in hopes of convincing investors that the coming year will be bountiful. And yet this year, the Nasdaq biotech index closed the week just about where it started at Monday’s open, thanks to a surprise epithet from the president-elect.
