WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats are warning Republican leadership that the health care bill moving through Congress would have disastrous consequences for the nation’s opioid epidemic, again putting the issue at the center of the debate on Capitol Hill.
A group of 20 Democrats sent the letter Tuesday to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. But the legislation’s effect on substance abuse treatment has been a bipartisan concern. Four Republican senators previously sent a letter to McConnell, signaling they would oppose an earlier version of the bill because of its impact on Medicaid and the mental health and addiction services the program covers.
1. NOT all opioid users are drug addicts! Some of us have serious & painful medical diagnoses requiring pain relief. [2.] Those that are addicted need the help to get well or will turn to illegal means! DO NOT TAKE COVERAGE AWAY.
I was an emergency room nurse for decades, you will cause a domino effect of bigger issues (mimimally) including, deaths; increase robberies; assaults etc. Addicts will do what they must to relieve their desire HELP THEM & us! It is a disease, like psychiatric problems because you don’t see lab results doesn’t make it less of an issue. Younger & younger kids are becoming addicts, they are getting pregnant at 10 years old & giving birth to addicted babies. OUR COUNTRY IS GOING DOWN HILL IN A HAND BASKET.
