Welcome to the corner office! Each month, we turn to a new panel of biopharma executives for insights about leadership and management — and tips for thriving in a roller-coaster industry. To share your views in future columns, please fill out this short form. To suggest questions for our panelists, email STAT Plus Editor Liz Cooney. For this column, we asked:
How do you nurture diversity in the workplace?
Bonnie Anderson, chairman and CEO of Veracyte, South San Francisco, Calif.: Our approach to nurturing diversity at Veracyte is simple: We hire the best people for the job. Just as our success in genomic diagnostics relies on applying creative solutions to clinical problems, our team keeps an open mind when hiring. The end result is a diverse workplace. Sixty percent of our employees are non-Caucasian. I am one of the relatively few women CEOs in life sciences and — even rarer — we have a female chief scientific officer. Additionally, 55 percent of our staff is female and women make up one third of our board.
