WASHINGTON — A top Democratic senator is asking PhRMA and BIO, the major pharma and biotech industry trade groups, to detail what they are doing to address sexual harassment at their members’ companies, particularly after an industry event earlier this month featured topless dancers.

In two letters sent Thursday and shared with STAT, Sen. Patty Murray of Washington cited “problematic public reports of gender discrimination and objectification.”

“Employers and employees in your industry are undoubtedly looking to you for leadership in how to tackle this persistent problem with the urgency it requires,” she wrote to Jim Greenwood and Steve Ubl, the presidents of BIO and PhRMA, respectively. Murray has jurisdiction over both health care and workplace issues as ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.
