WASHINGTON — The National Institutes of Health has referred 12 allegations relating to foreign influence over U.S.-funded research to a federal oversight office, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said Wednesday.
Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has repeatedly demanded information from the NIH after the agency revealed in August it was investigating a half-dozen academic institutions — specifically, researchers who may have failed to disclose financial ties to foreign governments.

Each year, about 16 cases of Tay-Sachs are diagnosed in the United States. Although people of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage (of central and eastern European descent) are at the highest risk, people of French-Canadian/Cajun heritage and Irish heritage have also been found to have the Tay-Sachs gene.

Finally. Yes it is time to follow all the money in medical and related research. Not just foreign influence, but domestic actors and “stakeholders” as well.
What could foreign entities possibly wish to influence in U.S. medical research? Maybe the Qataris want us to spend more on MERS? Israel wants more on Tay-Sachs? China wants more on bird flu?
The word “Influence” is an effort no to go into specifics. Specific examples may vary widely. A simple example would be outright theft of information related to research in progress. How to define theft may be troublesome. Hence, “influence” may be a default choice.
