Before biotech darling Juno Therapeutics was “Juno Therapeutics,” the company had a pluckier name: FC Therapeutics. The acronym stood for “F— Cancer,” a braggadocious rallying cry for the company’s bold drug development ambitions.
Now, after Juno’s buyout, the same team is throwing its energy and money into a buzzy startup with a similar code name: FD Therapeutics.
This time, however, they aren’t aiming to eliminate a few types of cancer. Sources inside and outside the company who spoke with STAT confirmed that the new company’s name hints at a philosophy centered around nothing less than eradicating human malady. That philosophy is “f— disease.”
