FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said the food side of the agency needs more attention Wednesday, the day after an agency-commissioned report recommended increasing the prominence of its food program.
[The FDA’s food program has] “been under-supported, under-resourced,” Califf said Wednesday at the Milken Institute Future of Health Summit. “Maybe the commissioners have all been medical people, so not so interested in that.”
Califf is also a doctor, but his second stint as commissioner has been marked by food safety issues; he was confirmed the same day that Abbott announced a baby formula recall.
