About STAT
In November 2015, STAT was launched as an international media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source for tough-minded coverage of the business of making medicines, health tech, science, and public health. We produce daily news, investigative articles, and narrative projects in addition to multimedia features, podcasts, and opinion pieces. Our team of editors and reporters has won numerous top journalism awards, including being named as a 2021 Pulitzer finalist. STAT is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent from The Boston Globe.
The Role
STAT is looking for an events programmer who can help its fast-growing events business move to the next level, both on virtual platforms and the physical stage. This person would be part of our editorial team and draw on journalistic skills to help us create informative and provocative events and to wrangle the most compelling speakers.
STAT prides itself on its collaborative spirit, flexibility, and a willingness to innovate, and we are looking for these skills in this position. Also essential: fidelity to bedrock journalistic values and a commitment to excellence.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee STAT’s book of monthly virtual events. This includes interfacing with reporters across STAT’s staff to help conceive strong events that can draw a large audience and generate sponsorship. It also means being able to nimbly change formats as business needs change.
- Help generate ideas and execute sessions for our in-person Summits and other in-person events throughout the year in several cities. This will include speaker outreach.
- Assist with audience development for events, making sure that we have not only the best high-level speakers but also the best attendees.
- This role could involve an on-stage presence, but does not need to. Our biggest need right now is to better organize and execute better speaker selection and preparation for successful events.
- If this person is interested, there could be opportunities for writing. STAT has an endless appetite for profiles of important people in medicine, exactly the type of individuals with whom this person will interact.
Who You Are
- At least three years experience in journalism or events planning.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- An ability to write quickly and interact comfortably with powerful people and their public relations people and assistants.
- Sensitivity to the needs of patients, who are frequently speakers at our events.
- An entrepreneurial spirit and passion for collaboration with reporters and editing colleagues and willingness to experiment.
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
- Flexible in balancing business needs and editorial priorities with a collaborative mindset.
Bonus Points
- Experience with health care, business, or science topics is a plus, but we’d also consider a voracious learner who is enthusiastic about understanding new beats, trends, and important players within those industries.
- We know that there are strong candidates who may not fit precisely into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
Compensation/Location
The minimum salary for this position is $70,000. We offer a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, a 401k plan, generous vacation, parental leave, and more. We also provide Care.com back-up care and have numerous wellness offerings, including free access to HeadSpace for all full-time employees.
This role would report to Matthew Herper, our Editorial Director of Events and Senior Writer for Medicine.
This person would ideally be based in our Boston HQ, but it is not a requirement. The STAT office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the U.S.
