STAT offers a variety of internship opportunities throughout the year, most of which are approximately 12 weeks in length. STAT hosts AAAS Mass Media Fellows every summer as well as a Director’s Intern from Harvard’s Institute of Politics.
In addition, STAT also sponsors three news reporting interns every year.
These news internships are intended for people planning careers in science and health writing. Generally, STAT aims to host one intern during the spring (February-April), summer (June-August), and fall (September-November), but these timeframes may vary. Because our internships do not always have a fixed start or end date, we will keep this page updated with the current status of our internship openings.
The most successful candidates for an internship at STAT are those who have a foundation of reporting experience at their college publications and/or have freelanced or interned for other publications. We prefer — but do not require — that candidates have a degree in journalism, especially those with an emphasis in science writing. STAT will also consider journalists who have no background in science or health reporting but want to transition to such a beat. We especially value those who will bring a different set of experiences than what we may have otherwise seen at STAT, so we highly encourage members of groups who have been traditionally underrepresented in journalism, and specifically science journalism, to apply.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. And although STAT is headquartered in Boston, we have staff all over the U.S., and will do our best to accommodate those who cannot relocate to Boston. Interns will receive an hourly rate of $18 and work full-time.
Spring 2023 Internship
This spring we are particularly interested in applicants who would like to help our multimedia team with our health equity podcast Color Code. Color Code is STAT’s bi-weekly eight episode podcast that weaves together stories and experiences of physicians, patients, historians, and other experts to illuminate the history of racism in the health care system and how it has — and continues — to impact people of color and underserved communities. In addition to writing and reporting stories, this intern will also:
- Help provide research for episodes.
- Help transcribe final episodes ahead of publication.
- Help with fact-checking scripts for each episode.
- A bonus for those who can – or have an interest in learning how – to cut tape and edit bonus episodes of the podcast.
Overview of the Internship Experience at STAT
- Interns at STAT are, in essence, general assignment reporters who handle daily news stories as well as longer trend pieces, profiles and other features. Interns should expect some assignments, including coverage of the latest news from scientific journals, and stories for STAT+, our premium service for subscribers. However, we also encourage the development of reporters’ own ideas.
- Interns will be assigned an editor, who will be their source for most things at STAT, including mentorship.
- Interns will also have a chance to participate in intern-only programming such as Lunch-and-Learns, which are topic-specific events aimed at helping interns tackle and learn about specific aspects of health and science journalism. Previous Lunch-and-Learn sessions have focused on navigating complex source relationships with major health tech companies as well as finding the not-so-obvious scientific angles for a feature story.
- Interns who are able to be in Boston for their internship, post-pandemic-life-willing, will have the opportunity to step out to local conferences and the myriad hospitals and academic institutions to report out stories or find new story ideas.
- Interns will also have an opportunity to participate in the many events we have at STAT, both social and professional.
Those who have interned at STAT have gone on to have successful freelancing assignments with major scientific publications and have been hired by some of these outlets (including STAT, although this is not a guarantee).
BGMP will require that all employees, including temporary employees, co-ops, and interns, regardless of work location, provide the company Human Resources team with proof of vaccination status through the secure system that will be provided for these purposes. For those who are not vaccinated for company-approved and verified medical and/or religious reasons, that same system will also allow you to upload required weekly COVID test results. Failure to comply with or enforce any part of this policy, or misrepresentation of compliance with this policy, may result in discipline, up to and including termination of employment.
