AstraZeneca (AZN) and Shire (SHPG) made $27 million in “secret” payments to health care professionals and organizations across Europe to boost medicines, The Times of London reports. The money covered consultancy fees and “related expenses,” and travel and accommodation for events organized or sponsored by the companies. The anonymous payments were made despite a European self-regulatory code of conduct encouraging drug makers to renegotiate contracts with professionals, such as doctors, and health organizations in order to include consent to disclose details.
