Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) agreed to pay $57 million to resolve a federal investigation into its financial support of charities that offer assistance to Medicare patients seeking help to cover out-of-pocket drug costs, according to a regulatory filing (see page 19). Jazz is among more than a dozen drug makers that have disclosed receiving subpoenas seeking information related to their support of patient-assistance charities. In December, United Therapeutics paid $210 million to resolve charges of paying kickbacks to Medicare patients through an ostensibly independent charity.
