A major hurdle stands in the way of the development of new vaccines, as well as the critical studies needed to determine the best way to use these important tools, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) warned in a letter published Tuesday in the journal Nature, STAT writes. Part of the problem is that testing new vaccines against placebos is unethical at this point, and testing them against the vaccines that are already widely used is tough because they are in such high demand globally.

What will the side effects from a booster shot look like? STAT asked experts for their answers. They cautioned, their responses were like “reading tea leaves,” as one expert put it. The data on adverse effects from a third vaccine dose are lacking, but one study of Pfizer (PFE) -BioNTech (BNTX) booster shots given to older adults in Israel suggests there aren’t any new concerns.
