Robert Califf spent his first confirmation hearing explaining his entanglements with the pharmaceutical industry to senators as they evaluated his candidacy to helm the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under President Obama. But now, if President Biden nominates him to lead the FDA again, Califf will have to explain his connection to another industry that’s vilified on Capitol Hill: “Big Tech,” STAT writes. It is not clear what Califf does day to day as the head of clinical policy and strategy at Verily, the life sciences arm of Google parent company Alphabet (GOOGL). Even one of Califf’s friends had trouble explaining his role.
