Laura Chang is editorial director of STAT, joining in 2022 to help the newsroom further broaden and deepen its journalistic ambitions. She came from The New York Times with a deep background in science, health policy, national politics, and data journalism. In her seven years as science editor, she steered coverage of embryonic stem cell research and other advances, and launched the popular Well column. She also served as national projects editor and later conceived and edited a special section marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Most recently, she helped found and was deputy editor of The Upshot, a team that combines data visualizations with journalistic analysis. She was editor of "Scientists at Work: Profiles of Today's Groundbreaking Scientists from Science Times.''
