Maddie Bender was a news intern at STAT. She previously reported for Scientific American as a AAAS Mass Media Fellow. Her work has been published in VICE, Popular Science, Inverse, CNN, Massive Science, and other outlets. She holds a master's degree in microbial disease epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health, and undergraduate degrees in biology and classics from Yale. She enjoys playing online chess, solving crossword puzzles, and spending time with her cat, Maisy.
