
Bertozzi is a scientist-entrepreneur, and 2021 marked her first full year as director of Stanford’s ChEM-H interdisciplinary institute for chemistry, medicine, and engineering to improve human health. In her own research, Bertozzi has demonstrated that cell-surface sugars may hold keys to improving human health and treating diseases such as cancer and bacterial infections. Building on this work, she has helped found at least seven companies. All the while, Bertozzi, who is openly gay, has been a mentor and role model for gay students and faculty.
