Cori Bargmann

Head of science, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative; neurobiologist, The Rockefeller University

Bargmann’s research on the neural circuits and behavior of C. elegans, the  tiny roundworm, has earned her numerous awards, including most recently the Salk Institute’s 2021 Medal for Research Excellence. But it’s arguably her job leading the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s science program that, some say, has made her one of the world’s most influential scientists. The program, launched five years ago with $3 billion in funding, supports “the science and technology that will make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the 21st century.” In December, CZI committed another $3.4 billion to the effort. Among the many programs Bargmann has directed funding toward are a new biomedical imaging institute and a Harvard center dedicated to studying natural and artificial intelligence.
