Joan Reede

Dean for diversity and community partnership, Harvard Medical School

Days after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, Reede spearheaded a “Stand Against Racism” rally on the Harvard Medical School quad. It was just the latest effort in Reede’s two-decade campaign to promote diversity at Harvard Medical School, where she is the first Black academic dean. Thanks in part to her work to recruit and support more faculty from underrepresented groups, representation of people of color on the HMS faculty has more than doubled since 1990, from 10% to 25%.
