Bedford, a computational biologist, tracks how viruses evolve, something that left him well-positioned to help sound an early public alarm about SARS-CoV-2. His work earned him a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant last year. Using NextStrain, an open-source platform he co-developed to detect new viruses and address outbreaks, he continues to provide real-time views of more than a dozen, ever-evolving strains of SARS-CoV-2.
