Promise and peril: How artificial intelligence is transforming health care

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to improve the quality of health care, increase access to more effective screening and personalized treatment, and reduce costs and health disparities. That promise, and market opportunity, has drawn billions of dollars in investment from big tech companies, health care industry incumbents, and startups. But if implemented incautiously, AI can exacerbate health care disparities, obliterate privacy rights, and perpetuate bias in ways that could harm patients and be difficult to detect.

STAT, with support from the Commonwealth Fund, is exploring the possibilities and pitfalls of AI in equal measure, illuminating best practices while also identifying gaps in regulation and laws that should be addressed by Congress and federal officials.
